Materials and Rationale for Building My Own Track:

I am going to attempt the building of a track addition that will mate to my SCX Digital system track. There are going to be many obstacles and as far as I know, this has not been done before. If anyone has mated track or has seen this done, send me the contact info so I can get assistance.

Motivation:

After I sat down and added the costs of the extra accessories and track, I decided it was time to find an alternative.

Why?

Cost is the main reason but there's more to the decision than the money. I wanted to build a realistic track complete with scenery, buildings, people, hills and a harbor /wharf scene. Every track I have looked at is flat and boring to look at. Sure the cars go round and round and I can work on them but I want more...

I used to build train layouts so I am going to do the same with my raceway. I wanted a realistic rally / road race set up with trees, grass, towns and water features (not real water) that really makes the hobby more than just buying cars and track. My kids are looking forward to it too. They can't believe I'm doing this and they are surprised at how they don't have the interest they used to have with their X-Box, PS2 and PS3 systems.

I chose MDF board because of the cost. Thickness has to be determined. This has to be decided right from the beginning because a lot will happen later based on this decision. I am going to use a router to cut the groove in a single piece of MDF.

Different Material Choices

(from Lowes website)

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)

MDF

MDF is a waste-wood product that is made with fine wood fiber.

This is perfect for creating a slot car track system
The smooth texture makes it ideal for covering with  most scenery materials or painting.

Particleboard

Particleboard

Particleboard is a waste-wood product that is made by mixing sawdust with adhesives. Although it will not bow or warp like plywood, it can swell and become unstable when exposed to water.

Use this for your table top

.

Oriented Strand Board (OSB)

OSB

OSB is an engineered wood product that is made with flakes or large chips of wood. The panels are formed from layers or plies glued together with their strands at ninety-degree angles to one another. The cross orientation of the layers adds strength to the panels and makes OSB well-suited for use as a structure board.

Where to Use MDF, Particleboard and OSB

Green: Suitable for all phases of layouts

Yellow: Can be used for layouts with limitations

Not very suitable for layouts except for rough building, scenery and mountain shaping.
